Updates: The loss column grows for vouchers

A couple of momentous decisions in voucher-land went down while BoardBuzz took an extended Memorial Day hiatus. The showdown in Texas that we previewed lived up to the hype. Long debates and clever legislative maneuvering went deep into the night and morning. When the dust had settled, Texas lawmakers had again rejected school vouchers, with Republicans and Democrats backing the state’s public schools. Great recap from the Texas Association of School Boards here, and more details from the Associated Press here, and the Houston Chronicle here. Two key amendments offered by GOP Representative Charlie Geren that ultimately scuttled vouchers: one that switched the location of the voucher program to school districts represented by the leading voucher proponents, and another to make it a public school choice program, not private.

In Arizona, Governor Janet Napolitano did indeed veto a corporate tuition tax credit measure that had been part of the budget deal brokered between her office and GOP legislative leaders. Both sides contend the other broke the deal. The Arizona Daily Sun reports on the fallout. More from the Arizona Republic, here.
