Math error costs Maryland districts $31 million

An error of simple addition in late 2007 threw off a government estimate of Montgomery County property wealth by $16 billion-an amount equivalent to the gross domestic product of Jordan-and spread, virus-like, through the budgets of at least 18 counties before it was corrected. The error resulted in overpayments to 17 school districts.

Columbus, Ohio, school leaders call 2008 a turning point
Columbus Dispatch, Jan. 11
At this time last year, Columbus City Schools were projected to be out of money by this fall. But today, district leaders are making plans to create new schools, hire more teachers, and spend millions of dollars to buy buses, textbooks, and technology.
